2.   Scope

The officer shall be a member of the staff of the Kulliyyah/Centre/Department to which he is assigned by the IIUM and the officer shall perform teaching, examining, and research duties and such other obligations as are normally required of an academic staff member of the IIUM.
 

The officer should also undertake
moral and religious obligations in relation to his colleagues and students as part and parcel of his duties as a member of the academic staff of IIUM.

The officer shall attend meetings of IIUM Authorities, Boards and Committees to which he, being an academic staff member, may be appointed as a member by virtue of the IIUM Constitution or any Statutes or Acts, or of any administrative actions of the Rector, Dean or Head of the Kulliyyah/Centre/ Department.

The officer is also expected to participate in the general life of the IIUM community.

The officer is also expected to advise and guide students in relation to their character, behaviour and moral conduct. In short, he is not only a teacher (Mu'allim), a scholar ('Alim) but also a moral educator (Murabbi).

 

3.   Key Responsibilities

 
 
    1.  Teaching and Learning
            a.    Deliver high-quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
            b.    Supervise postgraduate students (Master’s and PhD candidates) and guide their research projects.
            c.    Develop new curricula or revise existing ones to ensure they meet current academic standards and industry needs.
            d.    Engage in innovative teaching methods, including blended learning and online education.
            e.    Achieve a set teaching load per academic year, based on institutional guidelines.
            f.     Participate in student mentorship and academic advising.

 

       2.  Research and Innovation
            a.    Produce quality research output, such as publishing papers, books, copy right and others.
            b.    Secure research grants from relevant funding bodies.
            c.    Collaborate with other academics, institutions, and industries on research projects.
            d.    Present research findings at national and international conferences.
            e.    Contribute to the institution's research visibility by engaging in impactful projects aligned with national and international priorities.
            f.     Supervise research assistants, and other staff members involved in research.

 

        3.  Academic Leadership and Administrative Roles
   a.   Take on leadership roles under the department and Kulliyyah. 
   b.   Lead or contribute to curriculum development committees or institutional strategic initiatives
   c.   Participate in faculty or institutional governance, such as committees, working groups, or task forces.
   d.   Take on academic administrative roles.  
   e.   Participate in faculty governance, committees, or strategic initiatives. 
   f.    Collaborate with colleagues as an effective team player to achieve department and faculty goals.
   g.   Contribute to institutional and academic decision-making processes.
   h.    Work collaboratively with faculty and department members.
   i.     Contribute to a collegial and productive academic environment, sharing expertise and ideas for institutional progress. 
   
     
        4.  Community Service and Industry Engagement
             a. Contribute to public engagement by offering expertise to the wider community or participating in relevant outreach programs.
             b.  Organize or participate in workshops, seminars, or training programs for industry or community stakeholders.
             c.  Develop partnerships with external organizations, NGOs, or government bodies to advance the institution’s mission.

 

         5.  Professional Development
              a.  Engage in continuous professional development, including attending courses, workshops, and conferences to update
                   knowledge and skills.

              b.  Be active in professional bodies or associations relevant to one's academic discipline.

 

          6.  Student Development and Supervision
                a.  Contribute to the development of students’ academic and professional skills.
                b.  Provide academic support for students to ensure their academic success.
                c.  Participate in student activities and university events aimed at enhancing the student experience.

 

          7.  Internationalization
               a.    Promote international collaborations in teaching and research.
               b.    Engage in international academic exchanges or partnerships with foreign institutions.
 
 4.   Minimum Qualifications 

  • Candidates must possess a PhD in Tourism or any relevant field.
  • Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in Tourism, Tourism Management, Travel and Tour, or a closely related field.
  • Has high competency in English Language.
  • Has experience in educational field with minimum of one (1) year of teaching experience.
  • Experience working in tourism relevant industry with minimum of two (2) years.
  • Ability to do research and publications.
5.  Minimum Competencies

  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess team-working skills and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a diverse academic environment.
6.  Other Requirements (if any)
     Understanding of Shariah principles related to tourism industry and/or proficiency in tourism-related software would be a bonus.

7.  Language Qualifications
          All candidates must have obtained:-
a.  Credits in Bahasa Malaysia and English Language (including oral examination) at Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) level OR equivalent qualification recognized by the Government (for Malaysian citizens).
b.  Achieved English language qualification (at least) CEFR C1 / IELTS Band 6 / MUET Band 4.  Candidate without any of these qualification will be required to sit for the IIUM English Language Proficiency Test.
